Lake Tarpon Spring Fishing Report

The best spring fishing action is right around the corner, This is by far the best time of the year to catch those big trophy bass. The bigger fish are starting to migrate to the usual spawning areas. The water temp has been a little on the cool side from the all the cold fronts, the temp has been staying in the upper 50's to lower 60's. the forcast for warmer weather this week should bring it up to the upper 60's and lower 70's, that should be ideal to trigger a mass movement into shallow water, look for the bigger spawning bass to first show up in the bays and canals then along the shallow shorelines. The temp in the bays and canals should be just a little warmer being protected from the north wind and the canals always warm faster catching those rays from the direct sunlight.

The live Shiner fishing has been real good. I have had several guide trips this year with fish in the 8 to 10 pound range and it should only get better as the weather warms up. We've been getting anywhere from 15 to 30 fish on an average all day trip. I had a couple half day trips where we caught around 25 to 30 fish.

If you like using artificial baits you can't beat a plastic worm, lizard or sinko's this time of the year. The key is fishing real slow around those spawning areas. let the fish get a good look at the bait, they can't stand to have anything stay in the bedding area very long. please let all the fish go as soon as possible so they can finish spawning.

If you want to try to catch some smaller schooling fish (1 to 3 pounds) keep an eye on the mouth of the outfall canal, The shad are thick in the canal and the schoolers are near bye. they are very unpredictable but if you hit it right you can have lots of fun. try small top water baits, jigs, rattle traps and spinner baits.

Other areas that have been holding fish are the grass lines near hunts canal, the mid lake bar out in front of the big red house and both the main lake points.

If you would like to book ar guide trip or need any other information please give me a call or e-mail me.

Thanks and Be Safe, and God Bless,
