LAKE
LANIER IS
DOWN 17.3 FEET, AND LAKE IS STAINED AND THE CREEKS AND THE RIVERS
ARE STAINED & 78
DEGREES.
SPECIAL NOTICE: BE VERY CAREFUL RUNNING LAKE LANIER AS WATER LEVELS
FALL. THERE ARE MANY AREAS THAT HAVE TREE TRUNKS, STUMPS AND ROCKS
JUST BELOW THE WATER LEVEL.
Black
bass fishing is fair. The fish are very scattered and casting a lot
of lures will work as the fish seem to change from day to day.
The upper lake areas are quite dangerous as we have seen a lot
of tree tops just under the surface. Fish in the backs of the
major creeks and the bass are after baby bass Super Flukes on
a large 4/0 hook Mustad hook. Wahoo Creek behind the bridge is
always a great fall area. Go to the bridge and idle to the rocks
on the left side at the old road bed and work with crank baits
and spinner baits. Then go up about 100 yards under the bridge
on the right side and work all the docks hard after mid day.
There are lots of sand pockets in this area that hold warmth
the bait fish need. Cast baits to the mud banks and simply twitch
the bait. A Texas rigged ribbon tailed worms in gourd green or
red and black shad colors can draw a strike. Be sure to add some
extra scent to attract the fish. There has not been a lot of
top water action so disregard the buzz baits and top water baits
lake wide. Be sure to add some Jack’s
Juice. Fish pockets and points all day but keep a top water on
the deck with a bone Zara Spook. Shad Raps are fair and use light
6 pound test on smaller sizes of any crank bait. If you want
to try some live shiners and blue backs on and around the man
made brush piles. The root beer Bandit 200 crank bait works in
the off colored water up lake. The up river bass have been fair
with bright Bombers in the 7A Fire Tiger patterns.
Spotted
bass fishing is very good and they are feeding. Keep a top water bait
and a large one ready all day and make blind casts anywhere anytime.
Be ready as the stripers are feeding shallow on any main lake
point or pocket. We had our best luck fishing really fast with
all sizes of Zara Spooks and large Chug Bugs. Color does not
matter, just reel the baits really fast across the surface and
hold on. There are some big fish being caught all over the lake.
Drop shot rigs, all white spinner baits, jerk baits and finesse
worms are also very effective if you just want to try something
different. Today, we fished top water all day and caught spots
and stripers all day. Main lake reef markers and points are perfect
to locations to fish all day. Rig the drop shot with a #1 Mustad
offset worm hook. It really does not seem to matter what color
worm you use, after 20 feet deep but anything in green still
works. Any main lake point around the dam area is a good fall
area also. Make 30 to 40 casts with a top water bait and if the
fish are there, they will react quickly. We fished only 3 points
all day. The deep waters close by hold bait fish and the spots
push them into the shallows on feeding periods day and night.
Also look around the marinas as a back up area. In Holiday Marina,
fish the humps exposed in front of “M” dock. Use some extra scent on the plastics
and this may help the fish hold the baits long enough to feel the
strike and set the hook. Spinner baits are also working and the
Mini Me is hot with bright skirts and blades in the ½ ounce
size. Pick any set of wind blown points from Browns Bridge to the
dam and make super long casts. Run crank baits 10 feet deep then
cast a top water lure and only make 20 casts per point per bait.
There are some big spots on many of these points and they are feeding.
Striper fishing is hot and the fish are after top water baits
and flat lined herring. Here is the problem with flat lines. The
trees in the lake are only 16 feet below the surface and the stripers
head right into the trees. We lost 7 baits today to the trees,
so gear up with 50 pound braid to try and slow these fish when
they surface. Fish from Browns Bridge to the dam. Live bait will
work both flat lines and down lines. Herring and shiners will be
best. Trolling is fair just stay out in the old river and watch
the sonar for the trees. During the day, place down lines directly
over the tops of the trees at 40 feet. In the creek mouths, use
a down rod and have at least a 2 ounce sinker. Keeping the live
bait in the strike zone is critical to your success day and night.
Keep the baits up over the fish. Flat lines will work later when
there is a cloud cover. Some anglers fishing around the south lake
marinas are catching big fish around noon daily. Its past time
for top water but have both the large and small Red Fins, a buck
tail and a Sammy ready for any top water action. We have no reports
of trolling action anywhere on the lake.
